Carpets of Stone

This treasure passed down to us reminds us of the fortunes and grandeur of what was once Ravenna.

Between 1993 and 1994 the Superintendency of Archaeological Heritage for Emilia Romagna brought to light a complex of buildings datable from the era of the Roman republic to the Byzantine period.

There is a particularly interesting small palace of which fourteen rooms and three courtyards have been uncovered.

All the rooms of the building were paved with marble tarsia or covered with mosaics having a refined geometry and inserts of figures in polychrome tesserae.

After restoration the ' carpets ' of stone were returned to their places of origin in a subterranean room which was specially built and which can be entered from the Church of Saint Euphemia.
